PUKAmusic Curriculum Goals
Children will learn the following
Dozens of traditional and original songs that encourage participation
Children will learn and thereby perpetuate the age-old tradition and heritage of American folk and kid's music as well as beginning new traditions with Peter's original sing-alongs and musical dancing games.
To encourage their individual voices
PUKAmusic Instructors provide a warm, friendly, comfortable environment conducive to the discovery of self-expression through singing. We specialize in helping even timid kids to feel confident. Musical self-expression undoubtedly leads to a proud understanding of artistic and creative ability and a strong self-image.
To create original songs and new versions of familiar songs
Some music sessions will be devoted to writing completely new songs or making up new verses for popular traditional songs.
Healthy peer interaction and cooperation
PUKAmusic Instructors conduct each music session as an open forum guided by the same rules of participatory conduct as in grade school. Listening, sharing, taking turns, raising hands and patience are always emphasized in all children's programs.
Appreciation of many genres of music
live and recorded examples of folk, rock, blues, jazz, classical, old-time, bluegrass, funk, hip-hop, rap and pop music.
Basic music theory, song structure and creation
Each month, new concepts will be introduced, such as, song writing workshops that help children understand verse, refrain, bridge, intros, coda, piggybacking rhythm, rhyme, tempo, pitch, volume, melody and basic musical notation and much more.
To enhance fine and gross motor skills with musical games
Every session's core is a regimen of dancing songs designed to be great aerobic exercise, safe and fun for indoors or outdoors. Finger-play, hand, arm, leg, foot and body movement songs are a primary focus and differ in complexity from toddler sessions to Pre-K sessions.
Hands on exposure to a wide variety of musical instruments
PUKAmusic Instructors play and share a wide variety of musical instruments. Participants enjoy strumming, plinking, banging and shaking many kinds of
musical instruments from stringed to percussion to electronic.
